Current Opportunities

Land Surveyor-in-Training (LSIT)

Are you working toward becoming a licensed land surveyor?  Do you love variety and challenges?  Do you want to work in a small business atmosphere with a high-quality team of surveyors?  HTPO has an exciting opportunity for you. This position will be responsible for preparing maps from field data using AutoCAD Civil 3D for the Land Surveying and Engineering departments. 

In a typical week you may:

  • Draft and compute a wide variety of surveys including boundary, topographic, and ALTA/NSPS land title surveys, subdivision plats, and right of way and easement surveys
  • Utilize property research skills
  • Write legal descriptions
  • Prepare construction computations for survey crews
  • Work on a field crew for topography or construction staking
  • Communicate with clients and project team

You need to have:

  • A minimum of three years experience in land surveying
  • Completion of or near completion of a bachelor’s degree from a four-year land surveying curriculum
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Great organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong math computation skills
  • Proficient computer skills including AutoCAD Civil 3D and/or MicroStation
  • A desire to go above and beyond to meet the needs of our clients
  • A basic understanding of GPS and Total Station measuring concepts

CAD Technician

HTPO has a terrific opportunity for a CAD Technician who has experience or is interested in learning about surveying and mapping.

In a typical week you may:

  • Coordinate with a high-quality team of surveyors
  • Set-up drawings and work with survey field data
  • Draft boundary and topographic surveys, plans and easement exhibits
  • Assist with boundary and area computations
  • Collect site research documents
  • Request utility locates

Desired Qualifications:

  • Five years of experience with AutoCAD.  Experience with Civil 3D and MicroStation are a plus.
  • Strong math skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Great organizational skills and attention to detail
  • General knowledge of construction
  • Ability to read plans

Survey Crew Chief

Hansen Thorp Pellinen Olson, Inc. has a terrific opportunity for a Survey Crew Chief for a variety of projects including MnDOT Design-Build projects for the 2020/2021 construction season.

In a typical week you may:

  • Work independently and as part of a survey team
  • Perform boundary surveys, topographic surveys, and construction layouts
  • Communicate with client and contractors
  • Read and interpret plans
  • Manage field data, maintain field notes and files, review final drawings

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Five years of experience with performing construction layout and land surveys or related activities
  • Being self-motivated, and able to work both individually and as a crew member
  • Good communication and organization skills
  • Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information, communicate with employees, clients/contractors and the general public, and to maintain written logs and records
  • Acceptable driving record and valid Class D driver’s license

Desired Qualifications

  • Land Surveyor-in-Training (LSIT), Professional Land Surveyor (PLS), or NSPS Certified Survey Technician Level I-III
  • Experience with Leica GPS and Robotic Total Station
  • AutoCAD, Civil 3D or MicroStation experience

Physical requirements include:

  • Ability to work extended hours, including some weekends, to accommodate Contractor's schedule
  • Ability to travel, including occasional overnight stays, if needed
  • Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather and terrain conditions
  • Ability to lift approximately 50 lbs. and do repetitive work such as lifting, bending and standing for long periods of time.

Survey Field Technician

Hansen Thorp Pellinen Olson, Inc. (HTPO) is looking for a Survey Field Technician to join our team to support and assist crew chiefs with field surveying for all types of boundary surveys, topographic surveys, and construction layout.  Survey field technician responsibilities include staking, assisting with set up and operation of equipment and instruments to measure, record, and calculate data for construction staking and other types of surveying.  Land Surveyor-in-Training (LSIT) or NSPS Survey Technician Certification is a plus.

In a typical week you may:

  • Assist crew chiefs with construction staking, quality control, contractor communications
  • Manage field data, field notes and files
  • Assist crew chiefs with field surveying, including boundary and topographic surveys, survey for designs, plats, CIC, etc.
  • Assist with operation of equipment and instruments to measure, record, and calculate data
  • Stock vehicles with survey supplies and equipment

You need to have:

  • Two years’ experience in surveying or construction
  • Experience with, or ability to learn Leica GPS and Robotic Total Station
  • Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information, communicate with employees, clients/contractors, and the general public, and to maintain routine written logs and simple records
  • Acceptable driving record and valid Class D driver’s license

Physical requirements include:

  • Ability to work extended hours, including some weekends, to accommodate Contractor’s schedule
  • Ability to travel, including some overnight stays, if needed
